Inside interview with Bill Haney and Rod Dearlove

I first met Bill Haney in 1995 at the offices of Ginn Music Group, the owners of the Aware, GRC and Hotlanta labels in Atlanta, Georgia. Jimmy Ginn, the head of the organization told me he had a friend who owned a lot of tapes. The kind I was looking for. These meetings rarely are come to anything concrete but are always worth investigating: it's part of the job after all. The initial signs were not hopeful when a skinny white man wearing winkled pickers, a bootlace tie and cowboy hat turned up. However Bill had a gentle, friendly manner and we soon got along very well.

He was armed with a couple of cassettes and an old copy of the UK soul magazine Voices From the Shadows. It was an issue I had foolishly missed but, seeing Bill's photo on the cover of this respected publication and quickly glancing at the eulogies written to him and his recordings inside, my interest deepened considerably.

Bill Haney's knowledge, experience and understanding of black music was obviously immense and I felt sure a deal with Kent could be arranged. Bill died on 22nd of April 1997, before we could issue any of his material. I saw his pride in that Voices article and I am sure he knew his music would live on among his dedicated admirers.
